Slain 5-year-old’s family: ‘Sucks to see’ accused killer

VANCOUVER, Ore. (KOIN) — The man accused of killing his girlfriend’s 5-year-old daughter was back in court on Tuesday morning.

Ryan Burge, 37, is charged with 1st-degree murder in the death of Hartley Anderson. He pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Hartley’s family has been to every court appearance to seek justice for her — and Tuesday was no different. However, they said it’s hard to even look at Burge.

“It sucks,” Hartley’s aunt Whitney Luchau said. “It sucks to see him up there and just sitting there. And you know he probably doesn’t feel anything. He probably doesn’t have any remorse of what he did. It just sucks so bad to have that piece of our life taken because of him.”

Tim Luchau, Hartley’s grandpa, added, “There’s a piece of our heart that’s gone and we’ll never get back.”

According to the arrest warrant, Burge had been babysitting Hartley all day on Nov. 2. When her mother, Natasha, came home, she found her daughter badly bleeding. The child was rushed to PeaceHealth Medical Center and then transferred to Randall Children’s Hospital. But she was pronounced dead shortly after she arrived.

Burge’s trial is set for early June 2019.
