Small plane crashes in Salem, 1 dead


SALEM, Ore. (KOIN) — One person died after a small plane crashed in Salem early Saturday morning.

The calls came in around 8:25 a.m., Salem police said. The plane burst into flames, which were quickly extinguished by firefighters.

Peter Knudson with the NTSB told KOIN 6 News the plane was a Mooney M20E with only the pilot, John Douglas Layton, aboard. The Salem resident was 60.

Salem police said the plane crashed on takeoff. But the NTSB said the plane crashed during an aborted landing.
