PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Taking vitamin D can lessen the severity of asthma attacks, according to a new study published in the Cochran Database of Systematic Reviews.
The study tested 435 children and 658 adults with mild to moderate asthma.
Results showed those who took vitamin D supplements experienced fewer asthma attacks that required the use of oral steroids for treatment. Patients who took vitamin D also reduced their risk of needing to be hospitalized for acute asthma attacks.
While the study showed vitamin D offers protection against severe asthma attacks, it had little or no effect on lung function or day-to-day asthma symptoms.
