Deputies: Suspect hid in woman’s car for hours

Banks schools were on lockout while deputies searched the area

BANKS, Ore. (KOIN) — A man hid inside a woman’s car for hours before attacking her Tuesday morning in Banks.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said Lawrence Alan Roland, 43, was waiting in the car until the victim dropped off her child at school. Then, alongside the road near where Highway 6 goes into Banks from Highway 47, he revealed himself.

He tried to force the woman, who he knows, back into her car and wouldn’t let her go. A passing truck driver saw the struggle and called for help.

“The man was seen trying to forcibly put the woman inside the vehicle,” Deputy Brian Van Kleef said.

He eventually ran away through a field and the woman was not hurt.

Deputies searched throughout the day and eventually caught Roland when he was returning to his car, which was parked near the site of the attempted kidnapping. Roland, who lives in Hillsboro, faces charges of 1st-degree kidnapping and menacing.

Banks schools were on lockout for about 40 minutes while the search went on. The superintendent told KOIN 6 News he’s been there 5 years and never had to go into lockdown.
