Veterans Day honors Oregon service members

Veterans Day became a legal holiday in 1938

KOIN 6 News Staff - PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Veterans will be honored throughout Oregon and the nation on Friday with parades, speeches, events and discounts.

Golda Fabian and Hattie Kelley, who are each 93, are the grand marshals of the 2016 Portland Veterans Day Parade. The women were Marines during World War 2.

"We are honored to have these two women lead the parade," Scott Thompson, chair of the Portland Veterans Day Parade Committee, said in a statement.. "They are a wonderful example of the contributions made throughout our history by women service members-contributions that continue today more than ever."

November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" This legal holiday honored World War I veterans beginning in 1938.

-- Chow Down for Vets is an annual fundraiser supporting Returning Veterans Project's mission by partnering with local restaurants that donate a percentage of the day's sales toward sustaining free healthcare and other programs

-- Senator Ron Wyden honors World War 2 Newport Dr. Wallace High and Eugene's 'Rosie the Riveter' Juanita Eggers at Albany's Vets Day Parade

-- F-15 Eagle fighter jets from the 142nd Fighter Wing in Portland are scheduled to conduct flyovers at various events throughout Oregon

-- The University of Portland concluded its annual 24-hour vigil Friday, at 11 a.m. at the Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial on the campus's East Quad

-- Northwest Indians Veterans Association held a Veterans Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Oregon

-- Vancouver's Veterans Day Ceremony at the Armed Forces Reserve Center at 15005 NE 65th Street in Vancouver. The keynote speaker will be County Manager Mark McCauley, U.S. Army, retired Lt. Colonel.

-- Washington County's annual Veterans Day Ceremony at the Washington County Veterans Memorial, NE Veterans Drive and NE 34th Avenue, Hillsboro.
