Search suspended for teen swept into ocean off Washington coast


Agencies search 50 square miles in 18 hours with no results

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing teen swept off the coast of Southern Washington.

A 14-year-old boy was reported missing by a friend while swimming in Long Beach around 2p.m. Monday. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew a Motor Lifeboat crew were soon dipatched in search of the teen.

The Coast Guard saturated an area more than 50 square miles, completing eight searches over roughly 18 hours.

“Suspending search efforts is always an extremely difficult and heart-wrenching decision, especially when involving children,” said Capt. Nathan Coulter on Tuesday in a release. “This was a real tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the young man involved.”
