SALEM, Ore. (KOIN 6) — An 18-year-old West Salem High School student died Monday after crashing his longboard, Polk County Sheriff’s Office said.

Senior Joshua Robertson was riding his longboard on the 3100 block of NW Eagle Crest Road in Salem with his friend, a 17-year-old boy, sheriff’s deputies said.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., the 17-year-old called police to report that his friend, Robertson, lost control of his longboard and fell backwards, hitting his head. Deputies said Robertson was not wearing a helmet or other protective gear at the time of the crash.

The teen, who was found unconscious, was taken to Salem Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:10 p.m.

West Salem High School will be offering additional counseling services for students and staff throughout the week.
