PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Every October, Portland’s FashioNXT gets underway with four days of runway shows that rival the fashion shows you’ll see in New York.
This year, Portland’s fashion week will feature Liam Ridgewell, a member of the Portland Timbers who gets to show his fashion line to an American audience for the first time. It’s where fashion and sport meets in this place Where We live.
Ridgewell, a defender, was captain of the Portland Timbers team that won the MLS Cup in 2015. Three years later, the England native is still a Timbers Army fan favorite.
“Been really appreciative of that,” Ridgewell said. “Every single week they turn out in droves to watch us, and that’s a big thing for the town, and a big thing for the Timbers.”
For Ridgewell, there’s already more to life than what happens on the pitch. Several years ago, Ridgewell and a partner created Thomas Royall. The London-based swim and casual wear company, with a signature blue waistband, is looking to make a splash in America.
“A lot of people have done hats and track suits and other stuff,” Ridgewell said. “We just thought, let’s do something different.
“It’s been enjoyable, myself and my best friend. We love our fashion, love to try and dress a little bit differently.”
Ridgewell will show that line at Portland’s FashioNXT. Time Magazine called the four-day event the second best fashion show in America outside of New York. Portland has well-known designers, several winners from the show “Project Runway” and a reputation for its own sense of fashion, something Ridgewell plans to add to the show.
“We’re online. We’re in major stores back home but we haven’t branched out to America yet. So hopefully, this will be a stepping stone where we can bring it out to the US and start getting people in it,” Ridgewell said.
Ridgewell’s priority is still the pitch, but fashion is a passion.
“We just try to do it a little different, and see if people like it.” he said.
