Wildfire burns 41,000 acres near Hanford nuclear site

Officials said the fire was 60% contained by Friday afternoon

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A wildfire burning near the decommissioned Hanford nuclear site in Washington doubled in size overnight.

As of Friday afternoon, the Cold Creek Fire had burned more than 41,900 acres in Benton County about 10 miles west of Hanford, according to the Washington Department of Natural Resources.

Firefighters said the blaze was 60% contained.

Firefighters said persistent wind overnight Thursday contributed to the fire’s rapid growth.

Several highways in the area had been closed but no structures had been damaged and no evacuations had been ordered at the time of this report.
