TAMPA, Fla. (KOIN) — With people swarming into Tampa for Super Bowl LV amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many are turning to the outdoors for their pre-Super Bowl experience.
Sunday, all the action in Tampa will take place in Raymond James Stadium but all the events and pre-Super Bowl activities revolve around the Hillsborough River.
It runs through the heart of downtown Tampa and there you can find the Tampa Riverwalk, the Super Bowl Experience and Technology Village.
But if you go just 15 miles upstream, to John B Seargant Park, you can experience an entirely different version of that same river as you travel canoe or kayak through the 16,000 acre wildlife preserve.
Canoe Escape took us on an hour long kayak and canoe trip through part of the Hillsborough River and within minutes of pushing off, we were surrounded by Florida’s unique wildlife.
Owner Brian Faulk pointed out one alligator after another, many sunning themselves in the late January sun. He said on one of their trips you can expect to see anywhere between 30 and 50 gators.
He also pointed out the diverse bird population this ecosystem boasts. In normal years, people travel from around the globe to this very spot just to do some birdwatching.
