World Cup fans fill Toffee Club for US vs Spain

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The US Women’s World Cup team steamrolled their opponents in the current tournament but faced a competitive match Monday with Spain. And that brought soccer fans to another watch party at the Toffee Club.

Danny Harvey watched the game from the sidewalk outside the eatery at SE 10th and Hawthorne. Officially he was working from home but took some time in the morning to be part of the experience of watch one of the best women’s soccer teams ever assembled.

“We have the most dominant team in the world,” he said. “It’s inspiring because you’re watching women especially be the best at what they do.”

The Portland Thorns — arguably one of the most successful women’s sports franchises in the world — are well represented in this year’s Women’s World Cup.

“It’s amazing — especially for me being a Thorns fan — for our city to see it represented so well on the world stage and to see our players do so well,” Sheridan Hurd told KOIN 6 News. “We have players on Australia and Brazil and all these other — Sinclair for Canada. It’s amazing to see.”

Megan Rapinoe converted 2 penalties to lift the US over Spain, 2-1. Next, the World Cup quarterfinals against France on Friday.
