PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Younge people are demanding action on the climate emergency by calling for a strike on September 20.
The global climate strike is part of a week of action, which includes events in the Portland area, Salem and Eugene.
The local students planning a school walkout on Sept. 20 held a press conference Monday ahead of their walkout.
They said they are preparing for the walkout and encouraged students around the state to participate.
Their chief demands are for the City of Portland to consider the health of the planet in every decision, for Mayor Ted Wheeler to stay in Portland rather than attend the C40 Mayor Summit in Copenhagen and formally declare a climate emergency.
Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg has been challenging politicians and raising awareness about climate change this year and called on other young activists to participate in the strike.
