PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Northwest Avalanche Center issued an avalanche warning that was in effect through 6 p.m. Saturday in the Mount Hood area.

The warning did not apply to ski areas where avalanche mitigation measures are performed, authorities said.

The National Weather Service said there is also considerable avalanche risk on Mt. Hood Sunday and Monday in the backcountry areas above the treeline.

The avalanche danger for the warning area was high for all elevation bands Saturday. Warming with rain or heavy, wet snow, combined with very strong winds, are resulting in widespread avalanches. Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist.

Travel in the avalanche terrain is not recommended.

Avalanches may run long distances including onto valley floors or flat terrain.
