PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The air quality in the Portland metro is not very good Tuesday as smoke from regional wildfires has caused hazy and worsening conditions.

Areas near Tigard and Hillsboro dropped to “unhealthy” levels by 8:30 a.m.

Temperatures in the area will be in the 90s, but tempered by the amount of smoke that flows here Tuesday afternoon. By Thursday, temperatures will drop into the mid-80s and an onshore wind flow will help to alleviate some of the smoke.

A smoke dispersion forecast model shows how the wildfire smoke — which is coming from as far away as Canada — will move.

And the air quality conditions from Canada to California show large areas with unhealthy air.

The Oregon Health Authority recommended people stay indoors or limit their time outdoors. If people do go outdoors, the OHA recommended people limit their activity level.

Closings, Delays and Alerts

The unhealthy air quality prompted Beaverton School District to cancel all outdoor athletic activities for Tuesday.

Portland Public Schools also canceled all afternoon athletic activities.

Portland Parks and Rec said activities scheduled for outdoors would be moved inside if possible. They added all indoor and outdoor pools — except Peninsula Pool, which closes at 5:30 p.m. — remain open and all Parks and Rec programs are being held as planned. If the air quality moves to very unhealthy, then Parks and Rec said it could cancel or postpone planned activities.

Salem Keizer suspended outdoor athletics and outdoor marching band rehearsals for August 14.
