Weekend brings looming rain showers and thunderstorms

This may not be the best weekend to go camping.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The summer weather we’ve been enjoying will take a back seat as we head into this coming weekend with temperatures that are expected to span in the upper 70’s for a more spring or fall-time feel.

Check out our temperature trend over the last 10+ days. PDX saw a warm finish to July in the 80s, even starting August with a pair of 90s degree days. However, this week marked a big change as strengthening upper-level winds ushered in marine clouds into the valley.

We’ve seen a stubborn layer of clouds over the Willamette Valley that has kept temperatures in the 70s and well below the summertime normal. This time of year the PDX normal high is 82 degrees.

Cascade Mountain Forecast: If you’re heading out to hike or camp in the Cascades this weekend, we’ll there’s some wet weather (and thunderstorms) in the forecast. A large upper-level low system works in on Friday night and Saturday morning, bringing rain to the higher elevations. Make sure to carry rain gear and a couple of tarps for the tent, and prepare for muggy and moist conditions this weekend.

There is also a threat for scattered thunderstorms both Friday and Saturday afternoon and evening. The system will usher in much cooler air aloft, causing unstable conditions and a good chance for thunderstorm development.

Increased fire danger will also be a concern in eastern Oregon and Washington throughout the weekend. The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a Red Flag Warning across the region.

Weather models forecast thunderstorms along the central Cascade crest, the Deschutes National Forest in central Oregon, the Lower Columbia Basin of Oregon, and in the Blue Mountains and Wallowa Mountains in eastern Oregon.

Thunderstorms may be severe and include large size hail, heavy downpours, and abundant lightning. Play it smart this weekend and stay inside if you hear thunder in your neighborhood. It is not safe to walk or drive through storms.

Oregon Coast Forecast: Planning to head to the Oregon coast? We’ll see a mixture of morning marine clouds and scattered light showers. Layering clothing with some rain gear will come in handy. Highs this weekend will stay mainly in the 60s.

Portland Forecast: Saturday in Portland looks mostly cloudy with light rain showers in the morning, and then again throughout the later evening hours. Measurable rain in the valley this weekend looks unimpressive, but keep the rain jacket on you!

Forecast rain totals at PDX throughout the weekend anywhere from 0.02″ to 0.10″. Sunday fairs much better if you’re out and about on the town. We’ll see lingering showers through the morning with partly sunny skies.
